You've Rested It, Stretched It, and It Still Comes Back
Why the ache keeps coming back
Runner's knee has a way of fading just enough to make you think it's gone, then showing up again the next time you pick up mileage, get back on the trail, or take a longer run than usual.
Most people who deal with this have already tried the standard advice. Rest for a week or two. Foam roll the IT band. Cut back on hills. It helps for a little while, and then the same ache along the outside of the knee returns.
At Element Clinic, we don't just treat the sore spot. We look at how your whole body moves to find out why that spot keeps getting overloaded in the first place.
Why Runner's Knee Keeps Returning
What the body map actually shows
The pain shows up at the outside of the knee, but the outside of the knee is rarely the actual problem. It's usually the place absorbing stress that should be spread across your hips, ankles, and core.
Every visit starts with a full-body movement assessment and our body map. Mobility restrictions get marked in blue. Compensation patterns, the areas quietly overworking to make up for those restrictions, get marked in red.
Runner's knee almost always shows up at a red site. Once you can see it on the map, it finally makes sense why rest and stretching alone never fixed it for good.
What Treatment Actually Looks Like
Muscle work, joint work, and homework
This isn't a relaxation massage and it isn't a quick stretch-and-go visit. Once we know what's contributing to your runner's knee, Scott works on the muscles and joints involved in the same appointment. Sometimes that means hands-on work at the hip or ankle, not just around the knee itself.
You'll leave with specific homework, movements built for the pattern we found on your body map, so the work continues between visits instead of stopping when you walk out the door.
Most patients notice a meaningful change within the first few sessions. Scott will give you an honest timeline at your assessment, not a vague estimate.

Treating Runner's Knee at Both of Our Locations
One approach, two convenient locations
Element Clinic treats runner's knee and IT band pain at two locations, so you can pick whichever one fits your schedule and your training routes.
Our Brentwood, CA location, near the SF Bay, is inside Element Fitness gym, convenient if your runs or rides already start near there. Our East Sacramento location gives Sacramento-area runners the same body map assessment and same-day treatment without the drive out to Brentwood.
Same assessment, same approach, same clinician, at either location.
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers before you book
No. Scott holds a DC credential, but Element Clinic operates as a sports medicine and musculoskeletal practice. The focus is full-body assessment, movement analysis, and treating muscles and joints together, not traditional chiropractic adjustments in isolation. Many patients who specifically didn't want to see a chiropractor have found this completely different from what they expected.
No referral needed. You can book directly online at either the Brentwood or Sacramento location.
It depends on how long the pattern has been there and how consistently you follow through on your homework. Most patients notice a meaningful change within the first few sessions. Scott will give you an honest timeline at your assessment, not a vague estimate.
That's the most common situation we see. If you've had treatment and the pain keeps coming back, it usually means the root cause, often a restriction somewhere other than the knee, hasn't been addressed yet. The body map assessment is built to surface what previous treatment may have missed.
